Battle For ICC Champions Trophy Begins Today - A Mini World Cup 2009



CaribWorldNews, JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Tues. Sept. 22, 2009: The battle for the ICC Champions Trophy officially begins today.

There are 15 matches packed into the two week battle with host South Africa being the first up as they take on ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 finalist Sri Lanka at Centurion.


A big crowd will be there to see if Graeme Smith and his men can take their first step towards repeating the achievement of the 1998 Proteas and lifting one of the biggest prizes in the game. South Africa is currently ranked at number one in the cricketing world.


The West Indies, at number eight, are in Group A alongside Australia, India and Pakistan.

Group B is made up of South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and England.

All their tournament matches will be played at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. In the first round the Windies will play Pakistan tomorrow, September 23 then face Australia on September 26 and India on September 30th.
