Mitchell Johnson took 37 wickets at 13.97 in Australia's 5-0 Ashes whitewash in 2013-14

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has retired from all forms of international cricket.
The 34-year-old took two wickets on the final day of the drawn second Test against New Zealand in Perth.
"I feel now is the best time to say goodbye," he said. "I have been lucky to have a wonderful career and enjoyed every moment playing for my country."
He is Australia's fourth-highest Test wicket-taker, with 313 in 73 matches, and also took 239 one-day wickets.

Johnson was also a useful lower order batsman, scoring 11 half-centuries and one century during a career run haul of 2,034.

Eye drops the secret formula for record-breaking Ross Taylor in Perth

The secret to Ross Taylor's record-breaking innings came from a bottle of eye drops prescribed by a Brisbane optometrist.
Scoring one run, let alone the 290 he plundered off Australia's bowlers in the second cricket test in Perth, was his major worry after he struggled to see the red Kookaburra ball when batting during New Zealand's heavy defeat in Brisbane.
A pterygium on his left eye - a benign growth known as surfer's eye - was the problem that needed fixing, fast.
"I had to get my eyes tested in between. I couldn't really see the ball so the eye drops obviously worked," he said.
"The optometrist said 'when it's dark, you'll probably do this a lot'," Taylor said, demonstrating how he would open his eyes wide, "and I told the boys and they lost it, because that's how they take the mickey out of me."
Indeed, he saw it like a beach ball for most of the nine-and-a-half hours he batted for the highest test score in Australia by a visiting batsman. It moved him up to third on the New Zealand all-time list behind skipper Brendon McCullum (302) and his mentor Martin Crowe (299).

Sachin deserving candidate for Bharat Ratna: Dhoni

World Cup winning Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday joined the growing calls to award batting ace Sachin Tendulkar the Bharat Ratna, saying no cricketer deserves it more than him.

"I think he's done really great things for the country, taking cricket to the next level. He's known even in places where they don't know about the game, so I think it's a very big achievement taking the country forward. He's done remarkably," the Chennai Super Kings skipper said at a press meet to kickstart the IPL's fourth season, starting on Friday.

The Dhoni-led CSK, which won the double of the IPL and Champions League title last season, open their season with a home game against a Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders.
"Yes, 200 per cent, because he is an ideal candidate, he has served the country for 21 years with a few more to come. As a cricketer, you know, if he doesn't get it, then I don't think there's anyone who'll get the Bharat Ratna ever," Dhoni said.

Ricky Ponting steps down as captain

Ricky Ponting has stepped down as Australia's captain in Tests and ODIs following their quarter-final exit from the World Cup but will be available for selection as a batsman in both formats. Ponting made the announcement at the SCG on Tuesday, and backed Michael Clarke to take over the leadership of the team.
Ponting said the World Cup exit had prompted his decision and that "no one has tapped me on the shoulder asking me to go."

"I have resigned as captain of both the Test and one-day Australian teams. I will continue to play and am available for selection in both the one day and Test teams," Ponting said. "I have thought long and hard about what Australian cricket needs. Now is the right time for the next captain to assume the responsibility for both the Test and one-day teams. We have to be doing everything we can to win back the Ashes in 2013-14 and the World Cup in 2015. It is highly unlikely that I will be still playing so it is the right decision for Australian cricket that the next captain now be appointed. This will give him the opportunity to create his own direction and legacy.

"Today is a new start for me and I am very excited about the future. I will give my complete support to our new captain and continue to do my best to set the best possible example for my team-mates and emerging cricketers alike."
Ponting expressed his desire to travel to Bangladesh for three limited-overs matches next month. The team for the tour will not be named until Wednesday, but Ponting's announcement should allow Clarke to assume the captaincy on the tour, before difficult assignments against Sri Lanka and South Africa later in the year.

On his arrival home from an unsuccessful World Cup defence, Ponting had said he was prepared to give up the captaincy and also move down the batting order if it was in the interests of the Australian team. With the benefit of a day's reflection, he decided that now was the best time to go. At 36, Ponting believed he can still enjoy the type of renaissance that has sustained Sachin Tendulkar in recent times.

Ponting held the Australian Test and one-day captaincy since he took over from Steve Waugh. He led Australia in 77 Tests of which 48 were wins, the most for any captain. He also captained Australia in a record 228 ODIs and won 164, including two World Cups in 2003 and 2007. Ponting's fortunes as captain, however, waned along with those of the team as a series of retirements weakened its resources. His Test captaincy culminated in the 3-1 home Ashes defeat in 2010-11 and his one-day reign ended after the elimination from the World Cup.

Yuvraj Singh powers India to win against Ireland at Bangalore

A Man of the Match-winning all-round performance by Yuvraj Singh ensured that Ireland did not for the second straight game pull off an upset.

Yuvraj Singh approaches the bowling crease with all the ponderous inelegance of that Revital ad.

What he brings, especially on tracks offering some assistance, is a foxy savvy - a wicket to wicket line from close to the stumps coupled with variations in flight, length, point of release, extent of turn and, when he chooses to bang one into the deck, bounce.

That combination set up a five-for, and saved India's blushes in a game where the two regular spinners went wicket-less and Ireland raised visions of compiling a competitive score despite an inspired Zaheer Khan's twin strikes right upfront.

It's not often you get to say this, but it was actually an inspired bit of fielding that got the side back into the game. Coming together at a potentially disastrous 9/2, Niall O'Brien and skipper William Porterfield had, with initial circumspection and, once they figured out how easy singles were against this Indian fielding side, with growing assurance, added 113 for the third wicket off 146 balls.

With 23 overs left and a few fierce hitters in the hut, Ireland could anticipate a 250-or-so score that could have been challenging under lights on a Chinnaswamy Stadium track that had been so assiduously deprived of water and baked in the heat as to turn from a flat batting track to a turner.

If Yuvraj was about variety and guile, the two "regular" Indian spinners were diametrically opposite. Harbhajan had a track that turned and bounced; he had support in the form of two slips; but for the most part he stayed around the wicket to the left handers and speared it in on length, often missing his line and drifting onto the pads, and never looking likely to bag a wicket (World Cup combined analysis: 29-1-128-2).

If Harbhajan could at the least boast of economy, Piyush Chawla didn't even have that fig leaf. He came on in the 18th over and gave away 15, including 5 no balls with an offering where he overstepped, lost his radar, and beat everyone including the fine leg fielder. His first spell was 3-0-24-0; he was brought back in the 24th over and took all of 10 balls to complete the 'over' - his stint today was a nightmare endured with eyes wide open. At first he found bite and turn, but no control of line; he compensated by cutting out the leg breaks and bowling an uninterrupted series of googlies the opposition picked off with ease (World Cup thus far: 25-0-159-2).

Against that backdrop, Yuvraj's performance with the ball deserves all the kudos going, but the role of Zaheer Khan in setting it up merits mention. Having thumped England, Ireland would have come into this game with adrenalin pumping and, who knows, a halfway decent start could have inspired them to send India on a leather hunt.

Dhoni talking about world cup 2011 Expectations on India

Expectations have risen with a balanced team and a powerful batting lineup that give India a chance to improve on the two previous World Cups held on the subcontinent in 1987 and 1996, when it made the semifinals.

Though India has won the World Cup before, in 1983 under Kapil Dev, Dhoni stands to go one better if he can lift the trophy in Mumbai on April 2, having already won an international title for his country at the World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007.

Despite the inevitable tension, Dhoni has been relaxed in his approach. And his side has responded with convincing wins in practice games over Australia and New Zealand, and a similarly impressive victory in its World Cup opener in Group B last Saturday against fellow co-host Bangladesh.

"There is pressure if you win, pressure if you lose," he said ahead of the game against Bangladesh. "I would have told you the exact figure (of pressure) if I had a machine to measure it."

Such a situation is inevitable given that India is both a co-host and a tournament favourite, when it was neither in 1983.

Dev led an unfancied team which shocked favorite West Indies in the final at Lord's, triggering a process that eventually made the country the financial epicenter of the game.

Now, Dev is bullish about the current team's prospects of hoisting the trophy again for India.

"Dhoni should do better than me," he said recently. "He is a very fine cricketer, a fantastic captain and I hope he can achieve everything he wanted."

"The Indian team for the World Cup is the strongest batting lineup we have ever seen in world cricket. It looks a balanced team, though the bowling is a bit weak. So if they can play to their abilities they can emerge world champions," he said.

The batting lineup led by the world's highest-scoring batsman Sachin Tendulkar also has names like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh and captain Dhoni himself, who have all proved themselves over the years.

With Virat Kohli and Yusuf Pathan also going into the tournament in fine form, it is a batting lineup envied by rival captains. Education

Just as the landscape of cricket has changed since the last World Cup, with the advent of Twenty20 cricket, so Dhoni's stature has risen significantly in the intervening years.

India found a new leader when, with the country virtually in mourning after its shock exit from the 2007 World Cup, Dhoni led a young side to victory in the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa.

He then gradually took over as captain of the one-day and Test teams with success.

Pakistan win over Kenya in World Cup 2011

Kenya found their opponents too hot to handle after Umar hit a 52-ball 71 to anchor Pakistan's challenging total of 317-7 before they bundled out their rivals for just 112 in 33.1 overs.

Kenya, who lost by 10 wickets to New Zealand in their opener, bowled a record-equalling 37 wides in a hapless display.

"It was a good start but I think the next game (against Sri Lanka) is very important for us. I think it will become harder. I think we learned a lot of things from here," Afridi said.

Kenyan skipper James Kamande admitted his side had under-performed. "We've given away a lot of extras. I think maybe the guys are trying hard because every time we got a wicket we gave a few runs here and there and that should not be the case." upsoig govern whereas vsmu education then the lincolnchristian

Once Pakistan introduced spin, Kenyan wickets fell quickly with Afridi unplayable in the day-night match at Mahinda Rajapakse stadium. Only Collins Obuya, with 47, and three other batsmen managed to reach double figures as Kenya - bowled out for a paltry 69 in their first match against New Zealand on Sunday - faltered again.

Pakistan headed for a 300-plus total thanks to Umar Akmal (71), Misbah-ul-Haq (65), Kamran Akmal (55) and Younis Khan (50) as four batsmen scored half-centuries for the ninth time in a World Cup match. Also tucson and Gatech Education and ndsu education

Man of the match Umar, 21, playing his first World Cup tie, gave the innings a final flourish, sharing a rapid 118-run stand for the fifth wicket with in-form Haq who was equally aggressive during his 69-ball stay.

New Zealand vs Aussies in World cup cricket clash 2011

"We've got what we've got now, with the squad. We understand that Mike was disappointed not to be in this squad in the first place.... The medicos and our selectors felt he wasn't fit enough to come away on the tour."

Australia, bidding for an unprecedented fourth successive title and fifth in all, looked awkward against Zimbabwe left-arm spinner Ray Price in an otherwise convincing 91-run victory over the Africans in Ahmedabad that stretched their unbeaten run in World Cup matches to 24 straight games dating back to 1999.

"We know that spin factor will be a big one in this tournament. We know these conditions and know how to play in India or Sri Lanka," Ponting said.

"We need to play better (against spin). We need to be at the top of our game as the tournament progresses and I think are not there quite yet," added Ponting, who reportedly smashed a television set in the dressing room after being run out against Zimbabwe.

For New Zealand, who thrashed Kenya in their opener, the match promises to be a stern test of their World Cup ambitions but Vettori is confident his inconsistent side can raise their game against Australia.

"Australia have proved themselves on the sub-continent a number of times so they are going to be one of the favourites for the tournament," said Vettori. education

"If we are going to do well over here, we are going to have to beat the likes of Australia."

However, Vettori backed the Black Caps top order, which includes powerful hitters such as Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder, to propel New Zealand to what would be a first World Cup crown.

"I really believe our top four, top five can win this tournament for us and I think they will find Australia's pace attack to their liking."

Highveld Lions Beat Mumbai Indians in First Airtel Champions League T20 2010

JOHANNESBURG Mumbai Indians captain and batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and elected to field first against Highveld Lions in the opening match of the Champions League Twenty20 tournament at Wanderers Friday.

Mumbai Lions play the first match of Champions League T20. The game is played at Wanderers in Johannesburg to watch Sachin Tendulkar leading the Mumbai side, and Lions captain Alvira Petersen.

Teams

Highveld Lions (RSA)

A.N. Petersen (capt), J.D. Vandiar, V.B. van Jaarsveld, R. Cameron, N.D. McKenzie, Z. de Bruyn, T.L. Tsolekile (wkt), R. Frylinck, S. Burger, A.M. Phangiso, E. O'Reilly

The Lions have too much experience for them, and cause problems. Limiting Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn, none of the others have much to look as captain is a bit inexperienced.

Mumbai Indians (IND)

S. Tendulkar (capt), S. Dhawan, A.T. Rayudu (wkt), R. Sathish, J.P. Duminy, K.A. Pollard, R. McLaren, Harbhajan Singh, Z. Khan, S.L. Malinga, A.G. Murtaza

Mumbai has a strong bar assembly, which will see Sachin Tendulkar opening the innings and batters are Saurabh Tiwary, Drawyne Bravo, Kieron Pollard down the order. Zaheer Khan seems to have regained the form that made him effective bowler with Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga

Opening the batting for South Africa's Lions, the left-handed Vandiar hit 71 off 48 balls, including three soaring sixes, to give the unfancied home team an opportunity to beat the star-studded Mumbai lineup.

Former South Africa test player Neil McKenzie added 56 for the Lions and shared a 64-run partnership with Vandiar.

Jonathan Vandiar smashed his highest Twenty20 score Friday to lead the Highveld Lions to 186 for five against Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the Champions League tournament at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg

Champions League T20 set to begin today

Johannesburg: CLT20 would begin today with much fan fare. Champions League T20 2010 schedule and latest update are available via ESPNStar.com.

There are 10 teams participating in this mega event. Though, hype has been created by the promoters through media, but spectators here don’t appear as eager, as of now, as they were when the IPL came here last year.

The promoters are leaving no stone unturned to shore up the TRP ratings for the multi-million dollar event, but it seems, there is huge impact of the latest match fixing scandal at Lord’s.

If we talk about the ticket sales, promoters are still enthusiastic. In Durban there is a big Indian community, so it’s being expected that they would be participating.

Cricket South Africa officials have claimed that Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth have local teams, so sales have been fine there. But, the only venue that’s slightly sluggish is Pretoria.

As Matthew Hayden said: Cricket is a 'runaway train' - impossible to clean completely

Suspended Pakistan Trio to Return Home

The three Pakistani players at the centre of the spot-fixing scandal will return home within the next 48 hours Pakistan's interior minister Rehman Malik has said. The imminent return of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir does not, however, mean they are cleared from the ongoing criminal investigation: the government of Pakistan, Malik said, will provide a written assurance that the players be made available if needed for further investigations.

"We have spoken to Scotland Yard, and the [Pakistan] high commissioner to the UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, has also been in talks with them and they have agreed that the players can return to Pakistan," Malik told ESPNcricinfo.

A source close to the negotiations said the Pakistan team was waiting for a final green signal from Scotland Yard. "There are 30 per cent chances of them going on Friday and 70 per cent on Saturday," the source said. All three, the source added, would travel back together.

The trio were provisionally suspended by the ICC last Thursday and were quizzed by police the next day for their alleged role in bowling deliberate no-balls during the fourth Test at Lord's between England and Pakistan; an undercover sting operation by the tabloid News of the World apparently revealed that they had done so at the behest of Mazhar Majeed, an agent to the players. Majeed was arrested but released on bail while the players had their mobile phones confiscated. No charges have been pressed against them yet.

The development comes on the same day the PCB chief revealed that Wahab Riaz, the left-arm fast bowler, will be the fourth player to be interviewed by the police in relation to the scandal. Ijaz Butt sounded confident in his press conference at Gaddafi Stadium earlier that the three players would return to Pakistan soon and though he indicated that the criminal case against them might not be as strong, he did not say they would be cleared. The PCB's legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that investigations will continue.

The players also have to respond to the suspension notices served to them by the ICC for which they have one more week left. That investigation and process is separate to whatever conclusion police officials reach.

Cricket is a 'runaway train' - impossible to clean completely said Hayden

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has said it is practically impossible to completely eradicate corruption from the game of cricket.

"The investment the game places in protection strategies to mitigate against corruption is minuscule compared to the vast geographic areas the game is played in and the level of illegal gambling activity," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Hayden, as telling the Hindustan Times.

"It really is a runaway train," Hayden said, adding that the only the way to counter the threat of gambling was for every individual player and administrator to decide to personally uphold the integrity of the game.

The Daily Times further quoted him as saying: "We play a great game, and as players we are honoured to uphold its integrity as a product." (ANI)
